Planting hazelnuts at Elizavetovca

The Seed It Forward plans for spring 2016 didn’t include any large-scale planting events, because everything that is planted until summer was going to require monitoring and care. Two thousands something of saplings in Bubuieci, as well as personal gardens and beginnings of a tree nursery already seemed enough.

However, that doesn’t mean we didn’t plant anything new at all. For instance, there was a series of planting events in the framework of a partnering project of FLEX and activEco alumni, “Sustainable Development – Big Vision, Small Steps”, supported in the large part by our team. And the first of them, held on March 12, 2016, was planting hazelnuts by the village of Elizavetovca, Ungheni district, where the apiary of our colleague, founder and administrator of the “Dulce Plai” social enterprise, is located. Thus, the hazelnuts will become a great gift not only for the local community and the biodiversity, but also for the bees – it blossoms very early, in February-March, and produces lots of pollen – main source of protein for bees at this period, when the bee families most need it.

The weather on the planting day was very favorable for planting, cool and cloudy, but not so comfortable for people. So, one of the points in the things-to-do list was making hot tea, already a traditional element of Seed It Forward activities.

And so, as a small team that gathered the day before and spent the night in the neighboring village Todiresti, we found ourselves in a chilly morning in a hill close to Eliavetovca.

It was drilling the holes, or rather some funny craters that were distracting us from work – it was captivating to observe how they were being produced, again and again.

Unfotunately, the quality of seedlings wasn’t very inspiring – but that’s what you get when you buy them. For being sure of what you plant, you should dig the seedlings, or even grow them yourself. That takes more time and effort, but is worth it – and we are already working on this, but until we are capable of providing ourselves with all planting material, we are doing what we can.

In a few hours the main volunteer group arrived, coming from Chisinau, Ungheni and other localities. There were representatives of other environmental and cultural NGOs, Peace Corps and EVS volunteers, as well as activEco alumni… almost everyone being our acquaintances or friends. Almost perfect planting team.

Most of people were already busy planting, but the morning team was still continuing with marking – it had to be finished, so that the tractor could also finish making the holes and go to bring water cistern. 500 marks is a lot – so they were doing everything they could not to get bored.

From now on the 12th of March will be the day when 20 volunteers and 1 tractor with a driver managed to plant, in a day, a whole hectar of hazelnuts. And it will also be the reminder about not being afraid of “bad” weather. You can deal with it, if you have warm clothes and a good task to work on.
