  • Planting willows along the river Raut - 2nd edition

  • We have been waiting for it for almost a year, since the first willow-planting event on April 8-9, 2016 - and so, on March 18, 2017, we had the second willow-planting action on river Raut - a good team of 8 people, sun and rain, a lot of mud and placintas, and more than 400 willow cuttings planted. Special thanks to Vadim Matveev, Zarif Bakirova, Sergey Evteev, Anastasiya Poletaeva, Ion Ungureanu, Fagan Huseynov, Namaz Kerimov, Mike Waldron, Александр Петров, Nino Ugrekhelidze, Թագուհի Մինասյան, Sophia Shakirova, Sebastian Wehrsig, Thomas Handrich and Arpine Galfayan - that's your contributions that became food and transportation for the volunteers, but especially new reliable tools - the [...]

  • Direct seeding

  • As autumn turns into winter, it is becoming more and more difficult to dig holes - the soil is either frozen or heavy and sticky. What do we do then with the Seed It Forward motto about planting anywhere and anytime? Fortunately, there is a simple and elegant solution for that: direct seeding. According to the definition*, direct seeding (or direct sowing) consists of sowing seeds directly onto a seedbed in the final growing position for the woodland. On the one hand, this method presents a series of disadvantages: The seeds sown, and especially young seedlings are more sensitive to climate factors (low or high temperatures, early or late frosts, torrential rains, thick layer of s [...]
  • Planting a walnut orchard for a newborn and his family

  • Let's start a tradition in Moldova, to plant trees for all newborn children! Or - Moldovans are so severe that they plant walnuts even in December. In between November 30 - December 4, 2016, despite the beginning winter, part of the Seed It Forward team was planting a small walnut orchard for our friends and colleagues in village Riscova, Criuleni district. In the process, it also became known that, at the same time, a child was born in that family - so, those young trees will also be in the honor of him and his parents. Overall, 47 walnut saplings of the variety Pescianskii were planted, as well as a number of honey locusts as a live fence around them. Good start of the winter! [...]

  • Planting in Riscova, November 6th, 2016

  • Seed It Forward and Eco-Village Moldova do not know rest - after the big event on 5th November, the planting marathon continued on November 6th with thirty poplars along the Riscova stadium. The team was much smaller, a few adults, many children - but we managed to plant two rows of trees and protect each of them... and there was a lot of interesting tasks such as gathering clay and cow/horse's shit for the solution, measuring distances, digging holes, preparing saplings for planting (cutting off extra tops, renewing their roots and bathing them in the solution), planting itself, watering, gathering leaves for mulching, mulching, carrying poles for protection, creating protective fence, p [...]
  • Planting in Riscova, November 5th, 2016

  • Dear friends, we are immensely happy to congratulate you with a successful planting in Riscova! Together, we have realized a small miracle - on November 5th, 2016, we planted ~700 trees, making the first step against a massive landslide in village Riscova, Criuleni district, Moldova. A few days later, nature blessed our saplings with a long and gentle rain, consummating a perfect planting. Great thanks to everyone who has participated directly in this action: - volunteers - on the planting day, over a hundred of people worked side by side - adults and children, locals and foreigners - partners - MEGA, Eco-Village Moldova, American Language Center, Art-Labyrinth, Plantam fapte bune in Ro [...]
  • Planting willows along the river Raut

  • When you are in the spring mood - planting, planting, more planting! - you feel weird when the temperatures start to climb and leaves to appear. On the one hand, it means a long-awaited respite from hard work, but on the other, the next chance to contribute to greening our country will be only in autumn, months away... So, when we found out about the miraculous qualities of willow - for instance, it has a high potential of surviving and propagating - we decided that if it can still be planted, we just have to try. First, we planted some saplings by the Bubuieci lake and along the river Chiuluc in Singerei, in order to try it out and to create A practical and detailed photoguide to planti [...]
  • How to plant willows. A practical and detailed photoguide

  • First of all, you should know that’s not as easy as it may seem. Be ready to get dirty! Determine the location. Try to find portions of the rivers that suffer less from pasturing (for example, in such places where the arable land almost borders with the river) and where less people are roaming. Try to evade zones with a lot of reed, or cut it down around the sapling, because there is a high probability the reed will be set on the fire. Find donor trees. It is best if they are young, because the older ones may not be very healthy (affected by fungi or bacteriosis). It is also advisable that these trees are as close as possible to the planting site. If you can find only the large trees [...]
  • Planting hazelnuts at Elizavetovca

  • The Seed It Forward plans for spring 2016 didn't include any large-scale planting events, because everything that is planted until summer was going to require monitoring and care. Two thousands something of saplings in Bubuieci, as well as personal gardens and beginnings of a tree nursery already seemed enough. However, that doesn't mean we didn't plant anything new at all. For instance, there was a series of planting events in the framework of a partnering project of FLEX and activEco alumni, “Sustainable Development – Big Vision, Small Steps”, supported in the large part by our team. And the first of them, held on March 12, 2016, was planting hazelnuts by the village of Elizavetovca [...]
  • Planting good deeds in Bubuieci

  • The first action within the project „Plantăm fapte bune în Moldova” („Planting good deeds in Moldova”) took place on November 14, 2015 in the village of Bubuieci, Chisinau municipality. The planting event was attended by about 400 volunteers from different localities, educational institutions, profit and nonprofit, national and international organizations. And all of them have come with one specific purpose – namely, to contribute to the revitalization of a degraded piece of land. Together, we have already planted one quarter of the planned 10,000 trees on an area of 5 hectares. Instead of a former landfill, an offensive spot both for the environment and for the people who walk by [...]
  • Great thanks to everyone, we did it!..

  •   It has been lots of work in the past weeks - promoting, meeting with volunteers, collecting funds, buying tools and seedlings, preparing the field, etc. etc. - if anyone had told us just a few months before that we would be able to manage all this, well, not sure we would have believed him. But then the day of our first action, 14 November, has come - and it has been amazing. 400 volunteers from different locations, organizations, backgrounds and ages have come and helped us to start the revitalization of a former landfill in the village of Bubuieci, Chisinau municipality. For many of them that was the first experience of planting a tree - so it has been lots of positive [...]
