  • The Seed It Forward Nursery

  • There are different ways to get trees in order to plant them. You can buy them from a nursery, or you can take them from someplace like forest where they have grown by themselves. And there is the most challenging, the most demanding, but also the most heartfelt and thorough option of growing these trees yourself, from seeds. This way, you get them for free in terms of money and do not have to worry about whether it is legal or not to smuggle a tree from the forest. But this way, you are together with these seedlings since their birth, and, unless you have been doing it for years or you are able to tell yourself, "you cannot get 100% survival rate anyway, it's the same way in nature", you a [...]
  • Bubuieci park comes alive!

  • At long last the winter months, when the only thing we could do was just wait and hope that the trees and shrubs planted in autumn would take root, passed. The visits to Bubuieci are becoming more and more interesting - new leaves, new discoveries... However, the times when we will be able to just come and enjoy the park have not yet come. Right now the most important thing is to help the saplings live through their first summer on the new place. And our attention and presence are key to their survival. Bubuieci is full of jungle again - only now this jungle is not dry, spiny and unwelcoming, but lush green, almost hiding the mounds of trash so visible in autumn and winter. Even the earthen [...]
  • First winter in Bubuieci

  • December 2015 was totally dedicated to Bubuieci - monitoring, mulching, exploring, preparing territory for new plantings and even adding new trees and bushes. This was the time for us to become acknowledged with the whole territory and to realize what a number of two thousand and something actually means. That's when you see one wrongly planted tree, and replant it, and than another one, and another one, until the sky goes dark. That's when you mulch trees, and mulch more than 80 of them, and still you go and see so many bare ones. That's when you plant around 30 new trees and they become lost among hundreds. That's when there are such big borders to observe. At the beginning of Dece [...]
  • Plantăm fapte bune, autumn 2015 - conclusion meeting

  • On December 11-13, 2015, the coordinators of „Plantăm fapte bune” ("Planting good deeds") actions from Romania and Moldova met again in Tarlungeni, Brashov, to draw conclusions about the intense work they have done in the last months. The main objectives of the meeting were reflecting over the the planting events from the perspective of communication and organization, as well as through SWOT anaysis; coaching the teams (so that they can think more clearly about their recent experiences) and collecting ideas for the next year. It was a very useful exchange of experience that offered us the possibility to view our experience from a new angle and identify the points that we need to pay mo [...]
  • Field work, or what can you do in a weed jungle

  • So, we have finally decided on which piece of Bubuieci land to concentrate our efforts, and so our next tasks include managing to transform it in such an area where planting trees can become possible. That means - doing something with the weed jungle. Some of them are as hard and tall as young trees or bushes. It's not quite easy to detach them from the ground... But once you do, they fly quite well. Fresh tea break - combining ginger and lemon with hot water. Incredible - the stuff you can find in a former landfill. But we need to get back to work. After some hours, there is some difference from where we have started - but there is still lots to d [...]
  • Bokashi workshop

  • In one sunny September afternoon the "Zemstvei" museum of Chisinau hosted the first workshop on organic composting with the use of Bokashi bran in Moldova. It brought together not only Seed It Forward activists, but also other people willing to move to another level of responsibility for the products you consume and offer another life for the organic waste, which would otherwise get lost in all the stuff getting to the landfill - paper, plastic, chemicals, etc... The idea of organizing this workshop was born thanks to the initiative of an EVS volunteer, Liselotte Van Vliet from Netherlands. She has told us that her family, as well as other people from that community, are obliged to pay fo [...]
