  • Tree-caring event in Bubuieci, April 29, 2017

  • It is responsible and laudable to plant trees, but even more so - to help them grow. When we were planning a tree-caring event (so that the grass doesn't hide them again), nobody expected that there will be a total of 22 volunteers from Bubuieci - biology teacher Mariana Revenco and her pupils. About half of them met Seed It Forward for the first time, and all of them came because they wanted, not because they had to. Thus, April 29th saw an unprecedented thing - in several hours, we have found, weeded and mulched all trees and bushes that were showing signs of life - about one thousand. At the same time, young volunteers were learning / remembering, on real examples, about the benefits o [...]

  • What are our trees doing in winter?

  • What are our trees doing in winter, what is happening around them and what does Seed It Forward do then. Observations from Bubuieci, December 2016 - January 2017. Beginning of December - early, but amazing sunsets, time after time. Burning sunset and the stubborn red oak (Quércus rúbra) - still with leaves on. The horizon. December 21st - celebrating winter solstice and bringing some more food for the trees. For quite some time now, we bring our organic rests here, to avoid sending them to the landfill... well, to the regular one. Here, on our own landfill, we leave them in the places with the poorest soil, in order to enrich it. Some new colors. Privet (Ligústrum) also h [...]
  • Direct seeding

  • As autumn turns into winter, it is becoming more and more difficult to dig holes - the soil is either frozen or heavy and sticky. What do we do then with the Seed It Forward motto about planting anywhere and anytime? Fortunately, there is a simple and elegant solution for that: direct seeding. According to the definition*, direct seeding (or direct sowing) consists of sowing seeds directly onto a seedbed in the final growing position for the woodland. On the one hand, this method presents a series of disadvantages: The seeds sown, and especially young seedlings are more sensitive to climate factors (low or high temperatures, early or late frosts, torrential rains, thick layer of s [...]
  • Why fruit forest and not an orchard?

  • In order to get an answer to the question - why fruit forest and not an orchard? -  you just have to understand well each concept and the methods that are applied in each case. Let's start with an orchard. What is, actually, an orchard? Orchard is artificial ecological system, whose biologic equilibrium is maintained by human. Have you ever asked yourself as to why there is so much work to do in an orchard - loosening soil, weeding, spraying against pests, whitewashing tree trunks, etc.? All of these are needed due to the fact that this system is artificial and not self-sufficient (such as a forest). In a forest, the ecological balance is maintained thanks to the interconnections that exis [...]
  • Planting a walnut orchard for a newborn and his family

  • Let's start a tradition in Moldova, to plant trees for all newborn children! Or - Moldovans are so severe that they plant walnuts even in December. In between November 30 - December 4, 2016, despite the beginning winter, part of the Seed It Forward team was planting a small walnut orchard for our friends and colleagues in village Riscova, Criuleni district. In the process, it also became known that, at the same time, a child was born in that family - so, those young trees will also be in the honor of him and his parents. Overall, 47 walnut saplings of the variety Pescianskii were planted, as well as a number of honey locusts as a live fence around them. Good start of the winter! [...]

  • Planting in Riscova, November 6th, 2016

  • Seed It Forward and Eco-Village Moldova do not know rest - after the big event on 5th November, the planting marathon continued on November 6th with thirty poplars along the Riscova stadium. The team was much smaller, a few adults, many children - but we managed to plant two rows of trees and protect each of them... and there was a lot of interesting tasks such as gathering clay and cow/horse's shit for the solution, measuring distances, digging holes, preparing saplings for planting (cutting off extra tops, renewing their roots and bathing them in the solution), planting itself, watering, gathering leaves for mulching, mulching, carrying poles for protection, creating protective fence, p [...]

  • National campaign - do not burn leaves!

  • National campaign - do not burn leaves! Distribute if you want to breathe! Breaking news! Disaster! Plague! Leaves are coming! Oh, what a shame with all those leaves! You sweep them, you burn them, and they keep falling and falling! I'm going to tell you a great secret. If you leave leaves in peace - right there where they have fallen under the tree, the winter and the spring will pass, and leaves will disappear themselves! It is a natural wonder that happens, accurately, each year, thanks to worms and other soil creatures, unless you've already extinguished them in your garden. Do not deceive yourself that you are a good proprietor - when you burn leaves and other vegetal [...]
